Rules permeate our existence. They are the essence of how we function as a civilized society. They form useful guidance in making complex situations more comprehensible. They are also the bane of all of us who have ever been victimized by a bureaucracy run amok.
To understand the influence of rules, it helps to be able to understand where they come from, why they exist, how they evolve and the value they provide. It’s also useful to understand how they are manipulated, ignored, twisted and misapplied to create disastrous, misguided or unintended consequences. And it’s particularly helpful to know how to recognize, interpret and gauge appropriate response to the rules that we encounter in our own lives.
Rules have been a source of fascination (for different reasons) for both Peter & Mark. This month, they are jointly presenting their individual perspectives on the role, value and relevance of rules. They will each individually discuss the roles and relevance of rules, and collaboratively work to synthesize their individual perspectives into an overall understanding and a framework that we can all apply.
There is no rule that says that you have to attend. But we think it’d be a pretty good idea.
