Starting Over; Starting… Finally

This blog has been over two years in the making. The structure has been there, the content largely defined, and yet it never quite got to the point of launch. There were always things to finish; there was content to complete, links to find and earlier writing to incorporate.

Ironically, the original purpose – to create a space for my writing and work separate from the identify of my organization – is rather moot.

Starting now, I find myself starting over. I have, in recent months, changed directions, shut down my company and moved back to the city that I most strongly think of as ‘home’. So the original purpose of this site is no longer the current purpose; a purpose, however, still exists.

In the coming weeks, months and years, I – and my wife, Dianne – are embarking on a different journey. Some of that is rooted in both discovering and redefining who we are, and what we do. Some of that is in exploring the broader world. And much of it is in exploring the subjects and interests that have long fascinated me, but that time – or the lack thereof – has precluded me from exploring.

My most immediate priority is completing my doctoral thesis, a project that has been underway for nearly seven years. From that will likely come new foundations and new opportunities. At the same time, I will continue to embrace the opportunities and experiences that still hold my interest and engage my energies. Much of this, and other passing fancies, will likely be explored here in due course.

The earlier postings on this site are ones that began as the site was developing. Where they were relevant, interesting or in some way had something to say, I left them. I may build on them in future posts, and I may not. That’s the fun part of reinvention – just because you did something before doesn’t mean you have to keep doing it. Our journeys are shaped in part from where we started, and just because you change direction doesn’t mean your initial direction must be ignored or your point of departure obliterated.

So the past is still there in all of its incoherent glory. And the future awaits in all of its uncertain opportunity. Join me, won’t you?
